4. You overwhelm yourself with “to do” lists involving things that you love, on top of having to do lists for your job

5. You may not have to endure two-hour meetings, but you do have to deal with unanticipated events like boo-boos and toddler kick fights

When I first started freelancing from home, I had to use the shared living room PC to do most of my work. Because the kids were so used to playing games on that computer when it’s on, they disrupted my work process to demand for some computer time. It was hard to explain that Mommy was trying to do her job.

Lastly, the attic workspace gave me a lot of peace and quiet because the kids recognized it as Mommy’s Office, which shouldn’t be disturbed unless there’s an emergency.

While not having to dress up for work sounds like a good idea on paper – it DOES save you time – I quickly discovered that it’s hard to get into the “working” mindset when I’m still in my pajamas. Worse, it’s hard for the kids to understand that Mommy’s at work because she’s still wearing house clothes.

I’m not saying that you should put on corporate attire while you’re working on that home-based project due next week, nor am I saying that you should buy the latest in office fashion. All I’m saying is that it’s easier to become productive if you delineate your “work” period from your “family” period by having a visual or tactile cue to remind you that you’re supposed to be working. Putting on a nice blouse and a pair of jeans (as well as sandals) can go a long way towards making you feel more professional.

Step 3: Set Up Actual Work Hours

As nice as it is to have flexible work hours, it doesn’t necessarily make you productive or professional. Before I implemented my own work schedule, I ended up working more than I should have. I almost burned myself out, because I tried to use every spare moment I had to work on my projects. It also made it much easier for my kids to distract me.

Using Google Calendar these days keeps me sane. I can plan out my tasks and chores for the week, making sure that I have a solid 30 hours per work week dedicated to my freelancing and nothing more.
